frequently asked questions

if you need help getting started on this forum and aren't sure of what everything is, try reading through here before asking in the chatbox.

    what's this site for?
amputations is a writing and role-playing forum for all levels. members are sorted into a group based on their current writing ability. the main focus of the forum is to help members improve and grow as artists, not simply role-players.

do i have to audition to join?
    yes.

what is the criteria for each group?
while it should be noted now that there is no set criteria for being in one group versus another, there are key factors that generally put a member in a certain level. please follow this link to learn more.

i am a little low on self esteem and i'm probably going to say how much i suck before i audition. will the audition staff's pity cause me to get accepted by doing this?
i'm not a big fan of pathos in political speeches or in your auditions. don't tell us that you have no talent, are not advanced, or are not going to try because you won't be accepted. that's not going to help your chances, it might instead harm them.

i was put in a low group! you guys obviously have no taste and are elitist fags!
that's awesome, you know what? now i think we will put you at the top, because that definitely makes sense.

    can i change groups?
if you don't act like the above, of course you can. the site is about improving, you're not stuck in whatever group you first get.

when i was sorted, the critique i was given was really minimal. are you really that lazy?
yes. the critique given is minimal so that the auditions can be processed at the fastest rate possible. if you would like a more in depth explanation, please feel free to pm me, any other member of the audition staff, or post your piece in the critique forum.

can i move down a group?
if there is an obvious lapse in your writing, then yes, you may be demoted. i don't expect this to happen, but it's best to note that it is a possibility just in case.

ipbfree is foreign and new to me. i hate it and like invisionfree better!
you're an idiot. ipbfree is almost identical to invisionfree, especially to those of you who are not on the staff. the only major difference is that it uses bb code which is, in fact, much more popular and user-friendly.

    can i suggest a skin?
yes, when the staff is asking for one.

can i be on the staff?
no. if you ask, you will never get on. people who show that they are capable of being helpful, work well with members, and possess other skills necessary for a staff member will be offered a position if they want it. just telling us that you're super awesome and were on all these successful sites is not going to cut it.

i don't know anyone on this site! how do i make friends?
post in the chatbox, don't be stupid, introduce yourself in the forums, make a role-play search, etc. there are a lot of options, but be assured; none of them include whining about being friendless.

    what's an activity check?
a process we use to delete inactive accounts. to avoid getting your account deleted, simply post in the activity check topic when it's up, be active, and notify us via the away forum when you're going to be gone for a while.

my account was deleted for being inactive, but i want to join again. can i?
of course, we like having members. just, you know, try being active this time. you will need to re-audition and there is a chance that you will be put in a lower group, but that's really unlikely.

where do i post my audition?
in the applications forum. you will find you are not able to post in the other subforums, but some people need a little hand-holding through this process anyway.

can i post an application and just say i'm going to finish it later?
no. sorry, but seeing as there is only one "big" writing portion on the entire application that usually is just a matter of copy and paste anyway, you should be able to just post a completed audition. you can use the "preview post" button to make sure the coding works. incomplete auditions, as well as auditions with too long of writing samples, will be deleted within a few days if they are not fixed.

how do i change the skin?
scroll down to the bottom of the page and look in the left area. there should be a little orange button and a dropdown menu next to it. use the dropdown menu to change the skin or change it through your "my controls."

what's with the gloomy group names?
the forum's called amputations, i figured it might be nice to have a somewhat medical theme continue.

i have an opinion about your shitty ____, where do i go to bitch about it?
    no.

is harassing the auditions staff for whether or not i am ready to get a promotion a good idea?
no. apply for a promotion when you think you are ready, not when someone tells you that you are. it doesn't make any sense to piss off the people in charge of promoting you anyway, does it? don't harass the staff. ask for a critique in the critique forum, but don't expect a special, private comment just because you sent a staff member a pm or im.

i want to leave the site, how do i get my account deleted?
please do not ask the staff to delete your account. we have activity checks for getting rid of inactive accounts. this transparent method of demanding that the staff notice your departure is immature and over dramatic. it's hardly going to leave a good impression, so don't ask.

    where do advertisements come from?
when a member loves their site very much and want to earn points on it, they post an advertisement on other forums. advertisements do not come by immaculate conception. ie: if you say you referred yourself, you are a complete idiot. c: welcome to amputations.

where are all the accepted applications?
for a sense of security to the members, completed applications are only viewable to registered members.

    touch me.
    okay.

group information

the writing groups make it possible not only for all members to be accepted to amputations, but also to help every member improve their writing skills. while there is no set criteria, as every artist is different, these give an explanation of the general idea of what each group represents as a writing level.

MANIA

a newer writer, who is just developing. there are common grammatical errors and the writing itself is very simple and may be undeveloped. syntax is repetitive and diction is not extremely thought out yet.

SYNDROME

generally, someone who has been writing for a while now. there is more attention to detail and a sense of originality not found in the previous group. also, the diction is more advanced. though there are grammatical errors, they do not make the writing difficult to understand.

DEMENTIA

a writing style is developed, though not yet refined. fragments are often a common attribute of the writing for this group. syntax is much more varied, generally with attempts at experimentation for the sake of style. the diction is not only advanced, but also consistent and appropriate. originality is key and the characters created by these writers are believable as are their plots.

NEUROSIS

this is the most difficult group to be sorted into: they are the best of the best. these writers have refined their style and can produce work that is resounding when read. they do not struggle with grammar. their syntax varies and is strong and their diction is not simply advanced, but a part of the style they have created.

it should also be noted now that the method of processing auditions is such that if you could be in either of two groups, you will be placed in the lower group. this is not because we are elitists fags, i swear. it's because you have the ability to improve, but it wouldn't be fun for any parties involved if you had to be demoted.

 rules and guidelines
Posted by erato - 06-13-09 02:20 - 0 comments
rules and guidelines

rules are important to all forums and, if followed, help make everything run smooth. amputations doesn't have a lot of restrictions, but we do ask that you still keep them all in mind.

be mature and avoid causing e-drama. being thirteen or thirty does not give you the right to make a scene or throw tantrums.

you know, try to be... nice to everyone.

please don't spam our chat box with constant one word posts or links.

don't post anywhere other than the audition forum, places marked "guest friendly", and the chat box until you are sorted.

we have sailors' mouths in the chat box. we're sorry.

if graphic sex or violence appears in your writing, you need to give some kind of warning in the beginning of the first post or topic title.

there are no other restrictions on content at this time. i trust you guys!

no matter what group you are in, "one liners" are not okay. you are encouraged to try for over one hundred words each in character reply. you may be contacted by a staff member if your replies are often obnoxiously (less than fifty words) short.

advertise only in the advertising forum.

graphics should not stretch the forum. the maximum size for signature is 470 px wide and 200 px tall. the maximum size for posted images is 470x470.

if you link to something that's raunchy, give a little warning like "nsfw" so the younger members don't have scarred childhoods.

avoid double posting and ooc conversations in role-play posts. edit buttons, the personal messaging system, and chat boxes are very helpful for that kind of thing.

you must be at least thirteen to join amputations.

your username can be as creative as you want because you are able to use capitals, spaces, and punctuation marks here. however, please do not register with numbers after a word (ex. punkergirl27). it just looks ugly.

it really ought to go without saying, but do not register for multiple accounts in an attempt get a higher group without the promotion process. staff members can see ip addresses. you will be caught and you will be banned.

if you have the same ip address as another member, possibly someone who lives in the same house as you, PM ray before you post your application.

other than that, just think before you do?
